Airtel launches on-demand 8Mbps broadband service

13 October 2007 2 Comments

Broadband Internet services in India is gearing up for another revolution. Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecom operator, launches 8Mbps broadband service in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi, and the NCR region, with a subsequent roll-out planned in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Though the tariff details for the offering is not available, company sources says the pricing would be around Rs.2000 for 7 GB-8 GB download limit. With 8Mbps speed, Airtel network is getting ready for the proposed IPTV services.

As most of the customers do not need 8Mbps connection speed always, Airtel plans to introduce the service as an on-demand service.   By this option, customers who are having 256 Kbps - 4 Mbps  connection can pick up 8 Mbps hour based package and then can switch across to different speeds depends on the browsing need.  For normal browsing and chatting, 256 Kbps - 2 Mbps speed is more than enough but for file downloading and video streaming, some higher speed is needed.

The company is also introducing NetXpert, India’s first automated broadband self-care technology and PC Secure, which offers features like anti-virus and parental control.
